“Detoxification of the body: Separating Fact from Fiction”

Detoxification of the human body is a huge point for market sales in our world today. A lot of entrepreneurs produce and sell detoxifying agents like teas, juices, supplements etc to the unsuspecting population with unproven claims about the detoxifying power of these agents. The utmost priority is to make sure you are in optimal health and therefore you need to fully understand what detoxification of the body means, how the body detoxifies itself and most importantly what you can do to help detoxify your body.

What is detoxification of the body?

To detoxify the body simply means to remove toxins from the body. We get toxins into our body from the food we eat, chemicals in the environment that we occasionally come in contact with, from water, from air etc. Toxins are unwanted or poisonous substances which in this case can cause harm to our health.

How does the body detoxify itself?

When we are exposed to toxins, for example through the food we eat. Our body breaks down food and separates the nutrients for our use. The toxins or byproducts after the breakdown of our food must be removed by the body. It is removed by metabolic processes in the liver, kidney, skin and lungs and excreted in our sweat, urine, faeces, expired air etc. The body already does a great job with detoxification and as such does not need the help of manufactured detoxifying agents to do it.

However there are measures we can take to”make detoxification easier” for the body. These measures include

1. Drink enough water.

Drinking water can never be over emphasized. It is recommended to drink at least 3 litres of water daily. Drinking water helps to detoxify the body. It dilutes the toxins and makes it easier to be excreted from the body. Depending on your daily activities you might drink more or less quantity of water. Get a water bottle that is easy to carry around. This will encourage optimal intake of water.

2. Eat food rich in antioxidants

Antioxidants helps to to protect your cells against damage caused by free radicals. These free radicals are released by the toxins during the metabolic process. Examples of antioxidants include vitamin A, vitamin E, ,selenium, beta carotene, lutein etc. Food rich in antioxidants include carrots, berries, walnut, tomatoes, cabbage , green tea etc.

3. Reduce alcohol intake.

When alcohol is metabolized in the body, it produces a toxins called acetaldehyde which is poisonous to the body. The body converts it to acetate to be safely excreted from the body. Most of the alcohol we consume is processed by the liver. Consumption of large amounts of alcohol will overwork the liver and damage it. The Liver is a major organ for detoxification and its damage will lead to dire consequences.

4. Reduce intake of processed foods

Most of the processed food we consume have been processed with chemicals in order to increase their shelf life. These chemicals can be poisonous due to long term consumption. Get foods from natural sources and eat a balanced diet and it will be of great benefit to your body.

Other measures you can take include getting enough sleep, exercise etc. In some cases taking detoxification supplements might be beneficial , but if you do not take care of your health properly, there would be no difference in your health status.
